This year, Steelfest as the official metal summer festival opening takes place from Friday, May 17 to Saturday, May 18. The location is as always the Old Wool Factory in Hyvinkää in Southern Finland where over 30 bands from all over the world will raise hell on one indoor and one outdoor stage.
It was no easy feat for organizers Metallihelvetti to make sure this year's Turku Saatanalle happened after all with facing challenges like cancelled venues and flights. But they managed to pull off a fantastic festival weekend with Auðn, Djevel, Sargeist and Revenge as highlights among others.
It took a while to get to writing this report, but the spell that this this concert evening cast is still glowing vividly in my mind. Bar Loose in central Helsinki was not completely full yet on this Saturday evening, the new year only 26 days young. But one could tell the venue would be packed, as was to be expected for this sold out show.
In this grey November that was even desolate for Finnish standards there were two days where the atmosphere turned intriguingly darker, black even. But far from bleak, the two days of Steelchaos on November 9 -10 brought the vivid blackness that only extreme metal entails to a sold out Nosturi.
The weekend of October 12-14 was full of color - the trees of Helsinki were showing off their most beautiful autumn shades, the BlowUp Vol.4 festival wristband was gleaming in purple on my wrist and a weekend full of different, vivid and vibrant musical journeys was awaiting at Korjaamo – time for one of my favorite festivals in Finland!
November brings not only gloom to Helsinki, but also a weekend of blackest, darkest tunes when the metal hordes invade Nosturi for the indoor festival Steelchaos from November 9 to November 10. True Black Dawn will perform a special MeatHook show. In honor of this occasion, it's time to enjoy a very peculiar interview with True Black Dawn's Wrath.
In the fourth interview of the 'Towards Asia' series I talked with Ben Pakarinen from bands like Coprolith, Antagonist Zero and Cavus about his touring experiences in China to try to discover why Finnish metal is so popular in these countries.
Over the past weeks, Tuomas Karhunen shared his story, his views and what he has been up to in the past few years. But now it is time to talk about the future to end this interview series, and let me tell you, things will get really interesting in the coming year!
After a hopefully relaxing and sober Midsummer weekend ears and livers were ready for another summer festival weekend – Tuska Open Air Metal Festival no. 21 was calling for three days of music, friends and festivaling.
For several years, Steelfest in Hyvinkää marked the official opening of the summer festival season and this year was no exception. Getting once again lucky with the weather, it was time for 2 days of metal, sunshine, friends, and some drinks.
