Hell No! Who needs another (metal) blog?!?
This is what I was thinking when I was considering finally starting my own blog. But then the second question that came to mind was: Why the hell not? Metal has been a central and crucial part of my life for over 15 years and for the past five years I have been writing festival and concert reviews for Allmetalfest.com, collaborating with photographer Eija Mäkivuoti, and also began writing for the old-school underground zine Offense Zine.
I enjoyed this a lot, and there were more and more moments where I thought how interesting it would be to write about one or the other thing as well, but I didn’t have a suitable platform to publish these writing ideas. And thanks to (or blame it on) the internet and the blogsphere I now have the opportunity to do exactly that.
So on a stormy day at the beginning of the year on which Hel(l)sinki tried to earn the title of Heart of Winter I decided to actually put the thought into action, and lo and behold, The Metal Phenomenon was born.
Merriam-Webster defines a phenomenon as “something (such as an interesting fact or event) that can be observed and studied and that typically is unusual or difficult to understand or explain fully” and “someone or something that is very impressive or popular especially because of an unusual ability or quality”. The name comes from the twofold thought that it cannot be fully explained or understood why for so many people metal is so crucial and very often a major part of their lives both time wise as well as in regards to its importance. At least, that’s how it is for myself. I can only explain to a certain degree why metal is the music I fall in love with over and over again, and why it has become so much more than music. It is an experience; it makes me wonder.
And of course, metal is also just phenomenal!
The Metal Phenomenon revolves around metal, mostly of the extremer kind. I will continue doing interviews as well festival and concert reviews. Metal music is where the blog’s roots lay but I will also branch out to include everything I see as ‘metal’ - from art, literature, fashion, traveling to aesthetics and philosophy….whatever comes my way and I deem interesting, fascinating, inspiring, funny, worthwhile, weird or I just want to write about because I can. These are my views and interpretations on all things metal – nothing more, nothing less.
In this spirit, I hope you enjoy reading this blog as much as I will enjoy writing it.
